GREEN SUMMER SAVINGS
Save at the Pump Every gallon of gasoline you burn produces 19 pounds of CO2. Your car will run more efficiently if you obey the speed limit and avoid quick, unnecessary acceleration. Keep your tires properly inflated and get regular tune-ups. And don't let your car idle or warm-up under most conditions.
Save on Electricity There are several ways to lower your electric bills. Wash your laundry in cold water instead of hot. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible. You can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year. If you must use your dryer, check your lint trap. Lint builds up after every cycle. Removing the lint makes your dryer run much more efficiently. Open curtains to let sunlight in instead of turning on a light. Turn off unneeded lights and appliances, including coffee pots and microwaves. And unplug unused electronics and their charging cords to counter "phantom power" and "vampire energy" effects.
Summer Snacks A cone beats a cup when it comes to ice cream. Why? You're eating your dish instead of throwing it away. It's all about consuming less, using fewer of the resources needed to make products and packaging. Besides, a cone tastes much better than a styrofoam dish.
Bag Up Your Summer Shopping More than 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away every year. Start using a reusable cloth bag for groceries, garage sales, browsing in your local mall, and all your other goodies.
Cloth Napkins What a great idea for your next summer picnic! Estate sales, garage sales, Sally's (Salvation Army), and even GW's (Goodwill) are all terrific places to find cloth napkins for less. We love them here. my adult guests appreciate the larger sized napkins and the kids like to argue over who gets to use which colors. And the barbeque sauce simply washes out and the napkin gets to be used again. No more dirty napkins in the trash.
Gardens and Lawns Save water and money by watering your garden, yard and other plants in the early morning. This is the best time. If you water mid-day, most of your efforts will evaporate in the sun. If you wait until evening, you risk fungus and mildew setting in and eventually ruining your plants.
